The thought of a bathroom
makeover or remodel may be daunting for many people.
It is the second most difficult room to work on after
the kitchen. Not only are there the usual
decorating chores or decisions to overcome, but the
added complication of the electrics and plumbing.
Moving, adding or changing bathroom fittings often
involves much more than merely swapping old for new.
A room makeover
doesn’t have to be so full on though. Merely
changing the tiling, wall color or furniture can go a
long way to changing the look of the room and even the
way you use it. Replacing vanities, bathroom floor
cabinets, or adding mirrors, and other units can
completely change the character of the space. It
can be a good first step in a makeover because it may
negate the need to do any more.
When planning a
room makeover, the best way to get the best result is to
plan ahead. Make a basic plan of what you want and
where then get all the measurements you’re going to
need. This piece of work will ease the whole
process no end, and will go some way to preventing
expensive mistakes later. Knowing the space, and
having a drawing of it can help when shopping for
bathroom furniture and planning where to put bathroom
fittings. There is nothing worse than spending
hundreds of dollars on furniture and it not fitting the
room. Whether it doesn’t fit the style, or
literally doesn’t fit.
When making the
plan, also consider who will be using the room and how.
The needs of a family bathroom will be slightly
different than that of an en-suite and different to that
of a wet room. Spending a little thought on these
details can help you quickly paint a picture of how you
want the room to be used, and to look.
The style is
also something better planned in advance. It will
influence what you buy, and sometimes even where you
buy. A traditional style bathroom can be achieved
from almost anywhere, as it is one of the most popular
styles around. Whereas a contemporary style
bathroom is only going to be achieved with items from
certain places. An auction or antique store isn’t
going to be able to help you there, whereas it should
have a good selection for the traditional look.
In a larger
bathroom floor cabinets can be an effective and eye
catching way to store towels and other bathroom
paraphernalia. In a smaller room, more use might
be made of wall mounted units, sink cabinets or corner
units. There are some excellent solutions around
for smaller rooms, so much so that small is no longer a
problem. The Swedish are excellent innovators in
furniture that uses space efficiently. Their large
chain of ready-made furniture stores have some excellent
innovations when it comes to space saving, or space
efficient furniture.
There is now
more choice than ever when it comes to deciding on a
bathroom makeover, just do yourself a favor and plan it
before starting work. It will save you problems
later.
