I
have never liked things other people do. Some say
it’s a good thing, adds a little originality to life.
It isn’t always a good thing, because whenever I want an
item that means something, I can never find exactly what
I want. This is especially true when it comes to
clothes and furniture. I am a nightmare to shop
for and most people end up giving me vouchers or money
to spend myself.
Getting my kitchen refurbished
took me around six months. Two weeks to do the
actual work, and the rest to decide on a design and
style I liked. That’s no exaggeration either, the
only reason I actually decided on one was because I
found a good craftsman to make it for me. Having
customer cabinetry in my kitchen has transformed not
only the room, but the rest of my home too.
Finally I had something that exactly matched my
requirements and conformed to my taste.
The thing I learned about
having something custom made is that it doesn’t matter
what your taste is, as long as the design is physically
possible, you can have it. The sky is the limit
when dealing with craftsmen, they may give you funny
looks when you tell them exactly what you want, but they
get it done.
Employing a professional was the best
move I could make. I wanted a contemporary design
but only had a vague idea of what I wanted. The
designer who came to see me had a whole portfolio of
stuff on his laptop and made a mock-up of the room so I
could envision how things would look. The
measurements were taken and a figure agreed upon.
Let’s not mess about here, it isn’t cheap, much more
expensive than buying stock or flat pack stuff, but the
quality and workmanship is worth every penny as far as
I’m concerned.
Not only do you have to
consider how everything will look, but how it will all
work too. We all use our rooms differently and by
learning that I could modify my idea to better suit the
way I live. There are also the appliances to
consider, modern, traditional, steel, iron, plastics
etc. There is way more to it than I first thought.
Having an expert help ensured I got my facts right and
didn’t miss anything important. I mean who would
think of checking where all the pipes were behind all
the existing cabinets? I wouldn’t.
So having things custom made,
and consulting experts is the way forward for me.
Not only have I got my perfect kitchen, the job was
better, the design was better and the overall result is
better than I could ever have achieved on my own.
Paying other people to do your dirty work for you isn’t
everybody’s idea of being good with money. If
you’re planning to replace your kitchen or bathroom, I
would suggest doing it because it will save a lot of
heartache in the long run.
