Designing your new kitchen can
be an entertaining, and enlightening experience.
We often have pictures in our heads about how we would
like something to look. Often when we explore
these ideas a little further we realize those ideas
weren’t so good after all, and end up with something
completely different.
There are so
many styles to choose from that it can take a lot of
research to find something that fits your taste.
Other times, you might know exactly what you want and
find it immediately. Depending on your taste and
your needs, any of the following kitchen styles may be
just what you’re looking for.
The traditional
kitchen is generally made from hardwood and may have
glass cabinet doors to add character. They are the
longest serving, most established style and fits most
needs and applications. They can be finished light
or dark depending on the room and can be designed and
molded to fit most spaces. They are ideal for
older homes, or homes with a more traditional theme or
feel.
Country-style kitchens are similar
in that they are made of wood, and can often be carved
or use glass fronted doors, but will generally have
cleaner lines and be lighter colored. They will
often be carved much simpler than a traditional style
with cleaner lines defining the style. Country
style is often mistaken for Provencal style which is
more distressed and doesn’t really feature wall mounted
cabinets.
Cottage, or rustic style is a
mixture of Country and Provencal, uses wood and clean
lines, but emphasizes the comfy, cozy look. Some
Cottage designs don’t have cabinet doors, and reminds
you of a farmhouse kind of look. Very simple, but
user friendly, practical and hard wearing.
Modern kitchen
styles incorporates may design features such as metal
kitchen cabinets, sleek finishes and clean lines.
They use many materials and certainly aren’t restricted
to wood like the others, but can incorporate it to great
effect. The modern style is generally smooth and
unfussy. There will be no carvings or molding, or
ornate handles or hinges. The style is generally
practical and functional, a no-nonsense design.
This might not suit all tastes but is ideal in an
ultra-modern home or city apartment.
Regardless of
which style you prefer, there are enough variations of a
theme out there to suit almost all tastes. The
styles mentioned here aren’t the only ones around, they
are just the most distinctive and most popular. A
lot of research should be done before choosing your
cabinets and the overall theme of the room. Be it
wood or metal, kitchen cabinets will make or break a
room design so care should be taken in their selection.
Visiting home improvement stores, craftsmen or kitchen
specialists will give you an idea of what is available.
If you can’t find an off-the-shelf kitchen that suits
your taste you may need a custom made one in order to be
truly happy with the room. The only way you’ll
find out is to go and have a look for yourself.
