Let’s face it, mobile applications are here to stay, and that is a good thing!

Whether you are carrying a brand new IPhone, the last Blackberry from the market, or your old and trusty Palm, you want your device to be able to handle all kind of stuff. As a developer you want to be able to reach all those new and exciting markets, and provide the same services and solutions as your web applications does.

But it’s not always that easy. A mobile device it’s not like the web.
For starters you have to take into consideration the amount of information you will be displaying; You have to tweak your interface to make it easy to use with probably just one thumb, and there are memory and browser limitations to make it even more complex. On top of that, you’ll probably have to master a couple of new coding languages, which might take some time!.
And, as a coder, you’re anxious to bring your new piece of software to your users.

So what can we do about this?

At Wadomo we love Ruby on Rails. Yes, there are a bunch of languages out there, but we just have found in Ruby on Rails it’s the best match for our scrum-based philosophy:

Design right, code nice, change fast, painless deployment and awesome results!

If you don’t know about Scrum, this is what you are missing

In order to help the drive for environmental responsibility, we’re going to analyze the carbon cost of using a hand dryer in a public bathroom over paper hand towels. We’re going to support our claim that hand dryers are more environmentally friendly than paper hand towels.

To do this, we need to make some calculations, which we’ll keep as brief as possible, but they are necessary to make our point. We aren’t going to take into account the manufacture of each, but we will factor it in. We are instead going to concentrate on the carbon cost of running each for a period of ten years. We pick that period because it’s the average lifespan of a commercial hand dryer.

For arguments sake, we’re basing our math on 100 washes a day, and the towels are delivered from a depot 10 miles away. A standard pack of paper towels contains somewhere round 3000 towels. So based on our calculations, that would be one order per month. That’s 120 deliveries over our 10 year period.

A delivery truck averages 8-10 miles per gallon of diesel. Using a ratio of 2.63 kg CO2 for every liter of diesel burned, that makes 1434.7 kg CO2 for the run. That means the total carbon cost for using the towels is 1434.7 kg, ignoring the dispensing unit.

The average hand dryer uses approximately 0.02 kWh of energy while in standby. Nobody turns them off overnight, so we factor in the standby as a running cost for 24 hours a day.

That math is 0.44 kWh per day and 0.02 kWh in standby. Over 10 years, that equates to 1700kWh, which, using the carbon factor of 0.523 of modern machines (the accepted ratio of emissions) we get 890 kg of CO2. Again, that doesn’t factor in manufacturing and disposal.

So ten years of paper towels creates 1434.7 kg of carbon, whereas the hand dryer only 890 kg.

So that relatively simplistic calculation shows that using a hand dryer instead of paper towels will save almost 50 percent carbon emissions. A more in-depth calculation would mention production costs, weight versus space in delivery and disposal.

Paper towels are thrown out after use as they aren’t yet recyclable. They end up in landfill, and produce methane as a byproduct. So the carbon cost still mounts up after disposal. They also cost money to remove and be collected in the trash. We don’t calculate that here because it’s going to vary from city to city.

That said, the hand dryer is a complex machine, that costs carbon to make. Most modern ones will be recyclable, meaning their impact after use will be reduced.

The full lifecycle math is beyond my meager skills, but these basic ones show clearly that the impact of using a hand dryer over its lifetime is less than using paper towels.

Cabinet locks arrive in nearly as numerous variations in size and style as cabinets themselves. Since the very first wooden furniture made its way into our homes, cabinets in their various guises have been utilized to store points either to maintain them safe, or out from the way. As we grew much more prosperous, and acquired much more goods of value, the emphasis on protection grew, and so did the range of protection measures we could take to secure our new discovered wealth. Cabinet locks are one such way of maintaining our points safe. Either from curious kids, pets, or external threats.

Cabinet door locks arrive in two primary kinds, a disc tumbler or pin tumbler. For tumbler, see cylinder, what word is utilized depends on exactly where within the country you’re. A disc tumbler cabinet lock functions by rotating discs back and forth to lock within the lock to turn a steel cam which holds the door closed. This movement enables the lock and unlock function. A pin tumbler has spring loaded pins that drop down into location when it’s locked and are pushed back when unlocked.

Disc tumbler locks are probably the most well-liked, as they’re the simplest in style and have probably the most applications. They do not provide quite as much protection like a pin tumbler, but are efficient for maintaining the door shut or kids and animals out from the cabinet. Pin tumbler locks are much more suitable for securing property, and offering a small much more protection to the cabinet, and whatever is inside. There is really a well-liked variation from the pin tumbler for sliding cabinet doors within the plunger lock. This is exactly where the crucial is inserted, and then pressed in like a button to lock the mechanism. This button is known as a strike, and is what prevents the door from opening without being unlocked. Once the crucial is inserted, the button or strike pops out and enables for the totally free movement from the door.

Cabinet drawer locks provide a small much more variation. They’re either dead latching or spring latch locks and function just like doors. The dead latch functions just exactly the same like a door deadbolt and is merely a physical barrier turned in location by the crucial to avoid drawer opening. The Spring latch is like a door handle, exactly where the mechanism is pushed out by a spring, then retracted by the crucial. Both are really efficient yet easy to maintain and operate, which makes them perfect for their purpose.

The other way of securing cabinets is by utilizing a mixture lock. The locking mechanism is exactly exactly the same like a disc lock in that it uses a steel cam to avoid opening, but uses a mixture lock mechanism to totally free the cam. These are perfect for high use areas exactly where there may be numerous individuals who have to function the cabinet lock.

Most of us have cabinets purely for storage or for their aesthetic appeal, but it’s nice to know that you will find choices to maintain our stuff secure if the neighbors kids arrive to visit or the new puppy gets curious.

Unless you are going for expensive, high quality kitchen cabinets that are made of solid wood, most times, you’re going to get cabinets that are made of one of three products: particle board, medium density fiber board, or plywood. There are a lot of differences about each kind, but the main thing that goes with them is that they are inexpensive. If cost is an issue, you might consider getting cabinets made of these types of materials. However, here is a more comprehensive guide to the three different types of “wood” that are used to make cabinets, especially kitchen cabinets.

Particle Board: Particle board is actually not complete wood. Instead, it is bits of wood, saw dust, and other wood products that are glued together. However, it’s not an actual glue that binds the ingredients together, but instead, pressure. The one great thing about particle board is that it has an incredible screw holding ability, so they tend to stay together. The downfall about particle board is that your cabinets aren’t actually made of full wood. Instead, it’s the scraps of wood left over that are fused together with pressure that make up your kitchen cabinets.

Medium Density Fiberboard: This is similar to particle board in that it is made up of wood by-products. The main difference is that the by-products are higher quality and finer parts. It is known in the woodworking business as a top quality core material and can definitely be useful in your kitchen cabinets. If you want to have curved cabinets, this is the type of board that would be used because, unlike particle board, it can actually be bent and shaped in the way that you want your cabinets to look. It’s more expensive than particle board, but still very reasonable.

Plywood: This type of wood is actually wood in the simplest of ways. You take individual sheets of wood and combine them together to create plywood. What a lot of people tend to do when they are using plywood to construct their cabinets is cover it in wood veneer of some sort. This adds a whole new level of class to it because of the quality. While it is not solid wood, it can be fooled as solid wood because of the density of the plywood and the wood veneer on top of it. Going this route isn’t a bad idea and can be cost effective to create amazing looking cabinets.

Whatever material you decide to use for your kitchen cabinets is up to you. Real, whole wood cabinets look nicer, but the downfall of them is that they cost a lot of money and they do absorb moisture. The sheet built cabinets (particle board, medium density fiberboard, and plywood) don’t look as nice, but they hold together pretty decently and don’t carry any moisture, so there is no concern of the wood rotting. In the end, it comes down to personal preference and the amount of money you can afford to spend.

The Naples Postal Service is very efficient as far as getting your mail and parcels from point A to point B goes. It is neither the cheapest or the quickest though, which is where Box Galaxy comes in.

We offer a faster, more efficient mailing service to our customers which uses the best bits of USPS, and merges them with quicker, cheaper alternatives where we can. As any business who uses mail to market knows it can be an expensive enterprise. Not only do you have to produce the piece, but get it to where it needs to go, and then handle it once returned.

We can handle any outgoing mail from postcards, letters, parcels, and other media. We get them to their destinations as quickly as possible, as efficiently as possible, as cheaply as possible. Once the mail has had its desired effect we can also handle the returns for you too.

We can handle B2B and B2C, and can either supply the mailing list from a list of brokers or use the data you provide. Whatever you need, Box Galaxy can provide. By handling your correspondence from start to finish, we ensure that it gets to its destination every time. Our knowledge and experience of USPS regulations allows us to save time, money and bureaucracy.

Like we said, the Naples postal service is good at what it does, but there are times, and there are situations where they aren’t the best. Large volume mailing, odd shaped media, priority deliveries and other situations are where the service falls down. Box Galaxy aims to fill those gaps and offers a fast, efficient postal service that always delivers.

American International Group Inc. employees have returned less than half of the $45 million in bonuses they promised to repay in a goodwill gesture after the company received tens of billions of dollars in taxpayer aid, according to the Treasury Department’s independent watchdog.

A public outcry erupted in March when news broke that AIG paid out at least $165 million in executive bonus pay after being awarded $180 billion in taxpayer loans and incentives.

Days later, to avoid further embarrassment to the company, former AIG Chief Executive Edward M. Liddy told a packed House committee hearing that he had asked employees to voluntarily give back half of their bonuses. Mr. Liddy, appointed to the executive post after news of the company’s problems broke, said he lacked the legal authority to rescind the bonus payouts altogether.

But an audit of the AIG bonus program released Tuesday by Neil Barofsky, special inspector general for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), found that, as of Aug. 31, AIG had received pledges from employees to return only $45 million in bonuses.

So far, however, only a little more than $19 million of bonus payments has been collected, the report said.

Mr. Barofsky, testifying before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Wednesday, said that it appeared unlikely that the Treasury Department would be able to collect the full $45 million that was pledged.

“AIG has noted that it’ll be difficult for them to enforce collecting the money for those that have left the company,” Mr. Barofsky said.

Some employees pledging to return bonus money have since left the company, making collection extremely difficult, the audit said.

AIG officials told auditors that progress in recouping the full amount pledged has been delayed as the company negotiates with employees to restructure a second round of bonus payments totaling $198 million scheduled to be awarded by March 2010.

The audit accused the Treasury Department of failing to investigate AIG’s massive employee bonus program adequately before allowing the company to participate in the federal government’s $700 billion TARP bailout, created last fall as an emergency stopgap to stabilize the nation’s wobbly economy in the midst of the worst recession since the 1930s.

The audit caused a stir with the committee, with lawmakers from both parties accusing AIG of irresponsible use of taxpayer money while condemning federal regulators for failing to discover the bonuses before bailing out the company.

“Americans dont resent people who make a lot of money — we all want to make money,” said Rep. Edolphus Towns, New York Democrat, who is the oversight committee chairman. “But what infuriates people is when bosses at bailed out companies, virtual wards of the state, continue to rake in millions — in effect, our millions.

“It just doesnt seem right that the people who caused this tragedy should be so richly rewarded.” Rep. Darrell Issa, California Republican and the committee’s top GOP member, accused the government of becoming too involved in the private sector and said both political parties are to blame.

“Rather than learning from the mistakes of his predecessor, President Obama has entangled the federal bureaucracy across the private sector,” Mr. Issa said. “This was a political bankruptcy and not handled through a bankruptcy judge as our law requires.”

The Treasury Department did not become aware of the extent of the bonuses until February — after AIG received billions of dollars in taxpayer aid, the audit says.

“Although broadly aware of the existence of contractually required retention and bonus payments in November 2008, there is little to indicate that Treasury officials took steps to assess the totality of AIG’s compensation,” according to the audit.

AIG’s compensation package included 620 bonus programs totaling about $455 million for 51,500 employees, 13 employee-retention plans allocating about $1 billion to almost 5,200 staffers, and $311 million in deferred compensation paid to about 5,400 employees. Mr. Liddy argued earlier this year that some of the employees receiving the bonuses were badly needed to help unwind the company’s massive, complex bad assets.

The compensation program was so complex that even top-level company officials were unaware — and didn’t approve — of many of the hundreds of bonus programs available, the report says.

The audit also says New York Federal Reserve examiners began to realize the magnitude of AIG’s bonus program as early as October 2008. But TARP auditors said they “saw little indication that the knowledge being developed by the [New York Federal Reserve] about AIG’s compensation obligations was being passed along to Treasury in any systematic way.”
