What a lot of people tend to do when they are using plywood to construct their cabinets is cover it in wood veneer of some sort. This adds a whole new level of class to it because of the quality. While it is not solid wood, it can be fooled as solid wood because of the density of the plywood and the wood veneer on top of it. Going this route isn’t a bad idea and can be cost effective to create amazing looking cabinets.

Whatever material you decide to use for your kitchen cabinets is up to you. Real, whole wood cabinets look nicer, but the downfall of them is that they cost a lot of money and they do absorb moisture. The sheet built cabinets (particle board, medium density fiberboard, and plywood) don’t look as nice, but they hold together pretty decently and don’t carry any moisture, so there is no concern of the wood rotting. In the end, it comes down to personal preference and the amount of money you can afford to spend.

Duke Warnier of Westbury Properties is going to talk us through how the economic upheaval of the past couple of years is affecting the local property market. Duke has been in the industry for many years, and his company, Westbury Properties manages a portfolio of some of the area’s premier real estate.

“The real estate market as a whole has been an interesting space to inhabit over the past two years. The heights of 2006 when property prices were higher than most other places in the country to now and a 32% drop in property value.”

We have gone from one of the most valued property markets in the country to one of the most undervalued. Demand is still high, but credit is hard to get. The deposit requirement is now higher than ever, as is the qualification criteria. So there are some great bargains to be had, but the net doesn’t spread as wide as it once did.

Some analysts say we’re headed for a ‘double-dip’ where the economy contracts, then recovers and contracts again. This belief is given credence by the dearth of credit available right now. I’m not sure I subscribe to that. The quantitative easing measures put forth by the government have made great steps in speeding up our recovery, but now it seems government debt is the new sub-prime.

Both businesses and consumers are tightening belts and eliminating waste which bodes well for the future. I think the worst is over and we will slowly continue the recovery through 2010 and into 2011. The US economy is subdued but strong. Many business have battened down the hatches and are sitting tight until things improve. They have worked hard over the past couple of years to survive, and when things recover they will be in a great position to take advantage of new opportunity.

While most of the recovery so far has been generated by government demand, such as the ‘Cash for clunkers‘ scheme and other public spending initiatives, the private sector has also started reacting to the more optimistic climate. This is essential because without private sector input, the government alone won’t be able to sustain the recovery.

That said, the market is still active and has bucked the trend, thanks to the climate, the area and some great inventory. Naples is still a beautiful place to live, recession or no recession. People still want a slice of paradise.

Despite the slow recovery, the lack of credit and other factors, there are plenty of bargains to be had, and still plenty of money floating around to take advantage of it. This has meant the market, and Westbury in particular has weathered the storm quite well. We still have inventory to move, and clients to satisfy, and that’s all that matters really, and I know other agents are in the same position, which is a good place to be for the market as a whole.

When deciding to purchase cabinets, there is a decision to make: do I want easy or do I want difficult? That’ll be explained in a moment. While there is a big variety of cabinets in all shapes, sizes, and colors available for purchase, there is some basic understanding about cabinets that people need to keep in mind. That is the general classification that these cabinets fit in. In other words, are they RTA, Stock Cabinets, Semi-Custom, or Completely Custom. Knowing this information and knowing what you want will make purchasing cabinets a little easier and help determine how much you can afford to spend on them.

RTA: Ready-to-Assemble cabinets are the cheapest cabinet available to people and are usually the pick for those that move around a lot or are not good at assembling things. Ready-to-assemble cabinets come with the hardware already attached to the wood and all you need to do is pick where they are going to go and assemble it accordingly. Screw the cabinets up to the wall, attach the doors and then voila, the cabinets are done. The downside to ready-to-assemble cabinets is that there is a limit to the colors, sizes, and styles available for purchase.

Stock: Like ready-to-assemble cabinets, these are incredibly inexpensive because they are mass-produced and therefore, the company can afford to offer them to you cheaper. However, the downside to stock cabinets is that they are poorer quality which is the downside to the mass-production that comes with these cabinets. Furthermore, you get what you pay for. If you want variety or different colors, you’ll have to do it yourself because the factory churns them out as fast as possible. If cost is the most important aspect of the cabinets, get the stock cabinets. If you can afford to spend more money, try the semi-custom or completely custom route.

Semi-Custom: These are cabinets that the company doesn’t start to build until after the order has come in. Because they are constructed after the order, you can include measurements and specifications so that the company can build them based off of that. The style of the cabinets stays relatively the same, but if you need 80 inch wide cabinets rather than 78 inch wide cabinets, because you are ordering custom cabinets, you can get some more decision making. These are more money than stock cabinets, but the quality is greater and the outcome is greater.

Custom: This is any cabinet maker’s dream because here, the carpenter can really be creative. Here, you can pick the exact style that you want, the colors that you want, the finish you want, and the wood that you want to use. The carpenter will then be able to go about creating the cabinets exactly the way you want them. Because you are going entirely custom here and since these are typically hand-made, they will take much longer than any of the above types of cabinets. See how soon the carpenter can get them done and then wait.

Custom cabinets are obviously the most ideal because they are the nicest; however, the downfall to them is that they are incredibly expensive. On the flip side, RTA and Stock cabinets are very cheap, but the quality of them is poor and therefore, they can break much easier. Furthermore, if you were to put a lot of weight in them, there’s a good chance that they might break which is definitely not something you want when purchasing cabinets. So, see what your budget is and determine your needs then go and decide what type of cabinets to get. Custom is the best, RTA is the cheapest.

Bamboo is one of the oldest materials used for building furniture in China because they have an overabundance of it. In the West, bamboo is becoming a big design feature because of its ability to regenerate. When you cut down a tree, the tree is gone and you have to plant a new one. When you cut down bamboo, you get an entire stalk of bamboo, but it can regenerate and grow back rather quickly. This makes it an incredibly eco friendly building material that, as the environment becomes an issue on the forefront of people’s minds, makes building with it more appealing.

The great thing, though, is that bamboo looks really great. A lot of artsy types of designs go for bamboo because of its brightness, but also because of the effectiveness of it. Bamboo is really strong. More importantly, it’s really inexpensive. Because it continuously regenerates, there isn’t a shortage of it. Therefore, you can get a very modern, deco looking set of cabinets made of bamboo for, often times, half the price of what natural wood would cost. Add to the fact that you’re doing your part to help the environment and bamboo cabinets are a great investment.

The strength of the bamboo cabinet comes with the fact that it is actually a type of grass, not wood, that it is made of. Because of this, each individual strain in the sheet of bamboo used for the cabinet is an individual piece of bamboo. Because it is like grass, there are no knots and twists in the wood that would jeopardize the strength. An interesting fact about bamboo is that it is actually stronger than wood. Therefore, the bamboo cabinets will be able to hold more and handle more than wood. People don’t think of bamboo as strong because it is a grass, but the old saying goes: one arrow can be broken. A bunch of arrows cannot.

Bamboo cabinets are a great investment because they are inexpensive and they are strong. Some carpenters refuse to work with it because it isn’t real wood, but there are a lot more cabinet makers who are realizing the incredible power and pull of bamboo cabinets. Each piece of hardware has its own appeal and look to it that makes it perfect for the cabinet. However, picking the right one might seem a little difficult because there are so many to choose from. Here is a description of each.

• -Knobs: These are the most well known type of hardware for a cabinet door that is used to open it. They are typically shaped in a round or circular way that don’t take much space on the cabinet door. These are typically available in two ways: cup pulls and bar pulls. A bar pull looks exactly like a bar while a cup is shaped like a half moon. • -Hinges: An effective cabinet typically swings open and closed. For this to happen and for the door to stay in place against the rest of the cabinet, there needs to be hinges on the door. • How much space do I need? Do you need a lot of space to store a whole plethora of things? A lot of people want to maximize their garage space because they’re never in there other than when they are working on something handy, so if they can keep a lot of stuff stored, they’re pleased. Therefore, why not build hanging cabinets that are above the standing cabinets so that you can maximize every available inch. You can put lighter things in the hanging cabinet and heavier things in the stand alone cabinets.

Garage cabinets can make finding your tools the next time you’re working on your car a lot easier. They don’t have to be expensive and they don’t have to look pretty, but with a little time and effort, you can construct some very effective cabinets. Take time off one afternoon and put together a plan of what you want your garage to look like with all of the cabinets in place. Once you have done this, take those plans and put them to use.

It is important to understand, though, that while putting cabinets in a garage is a great way to maximize space and ensure that everything is organized, some garages simply cannot handle a large number of cabinets. They are either too short or too small. Find what gaps you can to put some cabinets in and load them with whatever odds and ends you can fit in them. Other than kitchen cabinets, the most important cabinets in a house are the ones in the bathroom. Unless you live in a mansion, space in the bathroom is always an issue because its purpose is simple: to use the bathroom and to bathe. Therefore, a lot of space isn’t necessary. The catch twenty two here, though, is that there are a lot of things required for a bathroom including towels, toilet paper, shampoo, soaps, etc, etc. Because of this, there is a great need for cabinets in the bathroom.

There are three things to keep in mind when purchasing bathroom cabinets. The first is durability. You’re going to be around a lot of moisture, especially when the shower is running; therefore, you don’t want to get particle board cabinets because they have the chance to rot and have mold grow on them. While they will be cheap in the short run, in the long run, you’ll have to replace them to ensure stability, but also your health. It’s incredibly dangerous to your health to have mold growing. So, consider spending a little more money to get bathroom cabinets made of higher quality.

The second thing to keep in mind when purchasing bathroom cabinets is what they will be used for. A medicine cabinet is a great way to save space as well as provide another necessary feature of a bathroom: a mirror. On the cabinet door, put a mirror instead of just leaving the door plain. This will allow for the person to store things such as toothbrushes, makeup, medicine, etc, while also being able to look in the mirror as they’re getting ready. Because space is an issue in the bathroom, cutting down on wasted space in any place possible is incredibly important.

Finally, you want to keep in mind the design. This is typically where most people fail because it is the last thing they think of and the budget they have for remodeling their house is depleted. Nothing stands out more in a bathroom than a cabinet that doesn’t fit. Make sure that your hardware (handles) match the other hardware in the room (towel racks, toilet paper holder, etc.) because this will connect all the different components of the bathroom together into one. It might seem a little bizarre at first to be connecting the room and making the bathroom so aesthetically pleasing, but it adds a sense of order and elegance to the room.

Because of their size, they don’t typically have to be all that expensive. As mentioned above, quality is more important than most other things, but even with high quality, it doesn’t mean the cost will be that horrible. Shop around. There are a ton of different bathroom cabinets available and numerous stores, such as Home Depot and Lowes, carry bathroom cabinets. The next time you have a free Saturday or Sunday, head over to your local store and check out what they have available. You may start remodeling the bathroom sooner than you expected.
