The garage is a great place to store your car and protect it against the weather. It’s a good place to put the lawn mower in the winter and the snow blower in the summer. However, we’ve all walked into a garage and stared at the complete mess. The reason for this is because it is difficult to keep everything organized. If there’s a handy person in the house, chances are, they’ve got a lot of tools. Storing them gets difficult. What about all the small screws and nails? Where do you put those?

The garage is a great place to store everything that might be used for the outside. The best way to store it is with cabinets so that it doesn’t get too messy and too overwhelmed. However, the design of cabinets for a garage is very important and requires a little bit of planning. Unlike bathroom cabinets or kitchen cabinets that are typically hanging, there is a lot of free, wiggle room for all sorts of different cabinets. Here are the steps to picking and building the right garage cabinets:

    • -What are they going to be used for? If you are going to use them to store hardware and smaller things like that, hanging cabinets might be good over your work area because you can easily reach up and grab what you need. However, if you are going to be storing larger tools as well as tall tools, you may want standing cabinets that go all the way to the floor with hooks inside to keep things secure.
    • -What materials do you want to use? A lot of people prefer metal outside because it is incredibly durable and aesthetics aren’t the most important aspect. If you are going for hanging ones, you’re going to need some heavy duty screws to ensure that the cabinets don’t fall of the wall. Since, chances are, you’ll be putting heavier things in them than you would a bathroom cabinet, you want to ensure that they are incredibly secure on the wall.
    • -How much do you want to spend? As is always discussed when talking about the construction or purchase of cabinets, what is the budget? If you have a very large budget, you can get some really great looking and functioning custom cabinets. However, if money is tighter, plan in advance what you want to do and build them yourself instead of buying them already custom built. You can still design your perfect cabinet, but this way, you can build it yourself.
    • How much space do I need? Do you need a lot of space to store a whole plethora of things? A lot of people want to maximize their garage space because they’re never in there other than when they are working on something handy, so if they can keep a lot of stuff stored, they’re pleased. Therefore, why not build hanging cabinets that are above the standing cabinets so that you can maximize every available inch. You can put lighter things in the hanging cabinet and heavier things in the stand alone cabinets.

Garage cabinets can make finding your tools the next time you’re working on your car a lot easier. They don’t have to be expensive and they don’t have to look pretty, but with a little time and effort, you can construct some very effective cabinets. Take time off one afternoon and put together a plan of what you want your garage to look like with all of the cabinets in place. Once you have done this, take those plans and put them to use.

It is important to understand, though, that while putting cabinets in a garage is a great way to maximize space and ensure that everything is organized, some garages simply cannot handle a large number of cabinets. They are either too short or too small. Find what gaps you can to put some cabinets in and load them with whatever odds and ends you can fit in them. A little order is a lot better than a lot of disorder, so if you can limit how much mess is in there, you’ve successfully implemented your cabinets.
