If space is at a premium then
wall mounted units are an ideal solution. They
offer efficient storage without taking up too much floor
space allowing to make the most out of the footprint of
your home.
There are wall units designed to
go in every room of the house, but particularly the
kitchen and bathroom. Storage is often at a
premium in these rooms and wall mounted units have been
a way round this for hundreds of years. The range
varies from plain wooden shelves, to medicine cabinets
to wall mounted entertainment units and everything
in-between.
Wall units don’t have to be wall
mounted, they can also involve free-standing units like
bookshelves, wall mounted like medicine cabinets to a
combination like some display units. The type you
want depends a lot on what you are going to use it for,
and where you’re going to put it. Heavy items like
books aren’t ideal for a wall mounted unit, there are
only so many you can put on it before the weight limit
is reached. Much better to use a floor standing
shelving unit or bookcase for those, whereas lighter
items or ornaments lend themselves well to wall mounted
units. Not only is it a convenient way to store
and display your precious items, but also a good way to
keep things out of the reach of tiny hands or paws.

Wood is still the most popular
building material for these pieces of furniture but the
choice isn’t limited to that alone. The use of
glass, wire and steel is also common in different
situations. It depends entirely on what use you
intend to put the wall unit to as they are also used
commercially and industrially, which is where the main
use of metal comes into play.
The material choice will be
influenced by the proposed use of the unit and the
overall design of the space. For example, kitchens
are predominantly wood in the home, and metal
commercially. Medicine cabinets can be any
material you want them to be. Wood is a material
often associated with traditional or antique design, but
can also be used to good effect in modern, contemporary.
Metal and glass is pretty much restricted to this modern
or contemporary look as it doesn’t fit with a
traditional one.
In my opinion there is no other
material quite like wood. It’s unrivalled in its
versatility and malleability. It can be molded,
shaped and finished into almost anything, and the
quality of grain and colors can be beautiful to behold.
The finish influences how attractive wood can be.
Paint covers up any defects or knots whereas a stain or
wax can accentuate lovely grains or textures is
hardwoods. The unique properties of wood means
furniture can be finished and re-finished as your needs
require. Therefore as your decor and tastes
change, quality furniture can change with it.
Wall units are a useful and
versatile item of furniture that can be put to a wide
variety of uses. They can add a feature and
function to any room and solve many storage problems.
